Commuter Carparks

As a commuter to the city during the sitting weeks of parliament, I understand the high demand for parking at railway stateions in the Penrith electorate.

Constructipon is underway for the multi-deck commuter carpark to the north of Penrith station. This is a jointly funded project receiving contributions from both the state and federal governments, with construction works under the co-ordination of Penrith City Council. When finished, the new carpark will hold up to 1000 extra cars.

Kingswood Station is also undergoing imrovements to the parking facilities with improved vehicular access to parking spaces on the Great Western Highway and improved lighting and surveillance of commuter parking spaces on the northern side of the station. It is anticipated that these and other upgrade works at Kingswood will be completed by early next year.

I'll continue to work to improve our rail and connecting infrastructuire across the Penrith electorate and I look forward to advocating within the O'Farrell Government to ensure public transport is a more attractive alternative into the future.

I alighted the train in Penrith one day last week, after the rain, and saw a gentleman having his car pulled from the mud by the NRMA, as he was forced to park on a shoulder of the street behind the Museum of Fire. Cars park all the way up this street, pedestrians have to negotiate their way around potholes, vehicles and mud - it's very dangerous. I simply cannot understand why the vast area of the old Army site, with paved and grass surfaces, can't at least be opened up for parking, because the commuters of Penrith are not holding their breath for a parking station on this site any time soon. Even though St Marys has a new facility, so has Emu Plains, both of which are not nearly as busy as Penrith! I'm surprised no-one's been run over, but I think it's only a matter of time, (then I guess action will be taken!). This land has been vacant for years, so why not utilise it? So ridiculous. Any comments?
