Mental Health Month

Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith has marked Mental Health Month by joining Mr Daniel Angus of Headspace Penrith to encourage everyone to take some time think about their mental health, and seek help if needed.

The theme for Mental Health Month this year, ‘Value Your Mind’, aims to encourage people to prioritise their own mental health and wellbeing just as much as they would to maintain their physical and social health.

Stuart Ayres said mental health issues affect approximately 1 in 5 Australians every year, and the awareness month was a good opportunity to understand the importance mental health plays in our daily lives, whether someone has experienced a mental illness or not.

“The busy hustle and bustle of our daily lives often means people forget to stop for a moment and consider their own mental health and wellbeing,” Stuart Ayres said.

“Mental Health Month provides the perfect opportunity for people to reach out to one another and talk about mental health, and in doing so help break down the stigma and discrimination that people with mental illness face every day.”

Headspace is the National Youth Mental Health Foundation providing early intervention mental health services to 12-25 year olds.

“I encourage young people in our community to take that first step, give us a call and talk to one of our friendly staff,” said Mr Angus.

Headspace Penrith is located at 606 High Street and are open Monday to Friday 9am to 5.00pm. Phone: 02 47208800.

Mental Health Month is coordinated by the Mental Health Association of NSW. For more information on events being held throughout NSW during Mental Health Month visit www.mentalhealth.asn.au
