Train customers in Penrith will have access to more services on weekends, the NSW Government has announced.

Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith said the boost of 750 new weekend train services across the Sydney rail network is the largest in a decade and is in response to massive growth in demand.

“We know from opal card data that more and more people are using public transport on the weekends. Between 2013 and 2016 there was a 68 per cent increase in weekend patronage,” Stuart Ayres said.

“There are some 14 million car trips made every weekend, and with our population growing and growing, this figure will only increase. We have huge transport and infrastructure projects underway but we also need more and more people to see train travel as a viable option on weekends.

“We know Penrith is a rapidly growing area of Sydney and it’s important that we provide locals with a bettering offering of weekend train services to meet their needs and encourage a greater use of public transport.

“Our goal is to boost service frequencies at many suburban stations to a train every 15 minutes at least.”

Weekend service improvements benefitting customers in the Penrith/Blue Mountains region include:

  • T1 Western Line frequency to the City doubled at stations between Penrith and Doonside with two additional trains every hour, or a train on average every 15 minutes throughout the majority of the day.
  • Weekend uplift for customers in the Blue Mountains with 24 dedicated express trains running between Blue Mountains and Sydney CBD.

This is the next step in the ‘More Trains, More Services’ program — a capital investment of over $1.5 billion to provide an urgent uplift in customer service on greater Sydney’s rail network.

Further announcements will be made in due course in relation to other parts of the program that will boost services across the rest of the rail network.
