Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith today announced that 4 organisations in Penrith will benefit from the NSW Government’s $5 million CCTV grants program to help safeguard against would-be crooks in the community.
Stuart Ayres said driving down crime rates is a priority, with the initiative delivering on the Government’s commitment at the March election to continue to put public safety first.
“Everyone deserves to feel safe and comfortable on the streets of their suburb, so the installation of extra CCTV is a great win for our community,” Stuart Ayres said.
“A picture is worth a thousand words and criminals who are caught red-handed on camera are more likely to be identified and prosecuted.”
Attorney General Mark Speakman said the grants would help at least 1000 businesses and organisations across western and south western Sydney boost surveillance.
“The NSW Government is investing in state-of-the-art CCTV because the more coverage we have, the more secure residents will feel,” Mr Speakman said.
“CCTV cameras boost community confidence and send a strong message to would-be criminals that if you do the wrong thing, you will be caught and punished.”
Cameras are being installed at targeted locations as part of an important initiative to deter crime and to improve detection and prosecution.
Police Minister David Elliott said the new cameras would be entered into the NSW Police Force CCTV Register, providing another crime-fighting tool to identify and catch criminals.
“CCTV puts the spotlight directly on offenders, to help reduce crimes like malicious damage, break and enter, shoplifting and assault,” Mr Elliott said.
“Stepping up monitoring of small businesses, community organisations and key locations around western and south-western Sydney will be a big help to frontline police.”
The CCTV funding has been allocated over four years and provides up to $5,000 toward the cost and installation of cameras.
It is open to not-for-profit community organisations and small businesses in western and south western Sydney with a turnover of less than $2 million.
