PACIFIC SHOWCASES NSW COMMITMENT TO DEFENCE
As Sydney plays host to the international maritime expo Pacific 2019, Minister for Jobs, Investment and Western Sydney Stuart Ayres has welcomed the maritime and defence industries to NSW on the opening day of the showcase.
“NSW has been home to the Royal Australian Navy for over a century and the NSW Government is working to support an expanded naval presence into the future,” said Mr Ayres.
“Pacific is the premier maritime defence expo in the southern hemisphere and it offers an opportunity for NSW companies to connect with international decision-makers.
“It’s a vital part of our broader commitment to foster the NSW defence industry, helping our companies develop leading technologies and win lucrative domestic and international contracts that create jobs in NSW and bolster the nation’s defence,” he said.
The 18 NSW exhibitors at Pacific will include Blueprint Lab, which makes the world’s smallest and most dexterous ‘robotic arm’ for underwater vehicles; and Ocius Technology, maker of the BlueBottle autonomous vessels that use renewable energy to search for submarines, detect mines or assist with electronic warfare.
“These companies are testament to the vital role the NSW defence industry plays in strengthening Australia’s defence capability,” Mr Ayres said.
Defence invests over $9 billion annually in NSW. More than 90,000 people are employed by Defence and the industry that supports it across the state.
NSW Defence Advocate Air Marshal (ret’d) John Harvey said the current fleet expansion offered significant naval sustainment opportunities for NSW defence industry into the future.
“Pacific presents an ideal opportunity for Defence NSW to showcase the expertise of our industry in this regard, including in terms of sonar technologies, complex systems integration and steel and armour plating.”
The Pacific 2019 International Maritime Exposition will host over 16,000 delegates from more than 50 countries at the International Convention Centre at Darling Harbour from 8-10 October. The NSW Government will also support Pacific 2021 as Principal Sponsor.
