Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith today joined Holly Epps of Penrith Selective High School to announce she has won the trip of a lifetime during the Centenary of Anzac to retrace the steps of Australian Diggers on the Western Front.

Twenty students will tour battlefields in France and Belgium as part of the 2018 Premier’s Anzac Memorial Scholarship. The Year 10 and 11 high school students from across the state wrote essays on the Anzac spirit to earn a place on the 13-day tour.

Holly and the other students will travel to Flanders in Belgium to commemorate the centenary of the Battle of Hamel on 4 July 2018 and other significant Australian battlefields including the Ypres Salient, Passchendaele and the Somme.

“This is a terrific opportunity for Holly to represent her school and the Penrith community on this life-changing educational experience,” said Stuart Ayres.

Minister for Veterans Affairs David Elliott said the journey would be something the students would draw upon the rest of their lives.

“The Premier’s Anzac Memorial Scholarship is a fantastic program, which enables high school students to further their education by visiting key historic battlefields in France and Belgium where Australian Diggers forged the Anzac spirit,” Mr Elliott said.

Earlier this year Mr Elliott and representatives from the Department of Education and the Office for Veterans Affairs selected the 20 schools via a ballot. Each school selected the chosen scholar through a school selection committee.

An official party including three supervising teachers and a tour historian will join the students.
